SEEDS Ecology & Education Centers is looking for AmeriCorps VISTA Members!

If you have an interest in capacity building and resource development for SEEDS, helping us improve our services, deepen our outreach, and make it easier for more people to engage in eco-friendly solutions in Northwest Lower Michigan, full-time internships are available through the national AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) program. The VISTA Member program is a year-long contract that offers a living stipend, health coverage benefits, and an educational award at completion of service. The education award can be used to pay off student loans or for other educational opportunities.

This is a big committment. The application process itself can take a month or longer. Start-dates occur nearly once per month - your complete application must be submitted well in advance of the start-date desired.

The following are possible specific AmeriCorps VISTA Member support tasks (please mention any preferences you may have relating to task and/or geographic placement):

EcoCorps Workforce Development
  • Conducting market research 
  • Networking and developing collaborations with community partners
  • Recruiting volunteers, resources, activities and donations
  • Creating and/or coordinating opportunities for mentoring (peer-to-peer and expert-to-student)
  • Assisting communications & storytelling through interviews and multi-media creation 
  • Monitoring project progress and tracking project metrics
  • Assisting with crew member skill tracking
K-12 Program Development
  • Logistics support for new multi-site field trips and activities
  • Preparing and restocking activity kits 
  • Networking and collaborating with school staff, teachers, administrators and with other community members
  • Recruiting volunteers, resources, activities and donations
  • Assisting communications & storytelling through interviews and multi-media creation 
  • Monitoring project progress and tracking project metrics
Communications & Engagement
  • Expanding outreach and publicity
  • Enhancing relationships with Media outlets 
  • Attending and presenting at meetings
  • Supporting special events
  • Assisting communications & storytelling through interviews and multi-media creation 
  • Recruiting volunteers, resources, activities and donations
  • Engaging in donor & volunteer appreciation
Triple-Bottom-Line Goal Setting & Evaluation
  • Supporting green certifications for schools and other institutions
  • Collecting and coordinating datasets 
  • Reporting and synthesizing data
  • Integrating with organizational communications
  • Researching best practices for clean energy, green purchasing, waste management, etc.
Historic Barns Park Development
  • Creating and/or coordinating K-12 and family-friendly activities 
  • Supporting the development of hands-on learning opportunities
  • Researching best practices
  • Recruiting volunteers, resources, activities and donations
  • Identifying and enhancing opportunities for service learning

Placements are negotiated based on your skills and interests, as well as our program needs.
