Harvest Celebration

Monday, October 24, 2011

SEEDS @ KMS celebrated the harvest season with a bang! Students made huge steaming pots of chili made from local ingredients and Shetler Dairy beef. They also made gallons of apple cider, painted pumpkins and made delicious caramel apples. At the end of programming, they served their families to a traditional sit-down meal.

SEEDS would like to thank Altonen Orchards for their very generous donation of apples for this event and the Cherry Street Market in Kalkaska for their donation of pumpkins.

Pizza @ the Football Game

Friday, September 30, 2011

SEEDS had their artisan brick pizza oven at the Kalkaska Varsity Homecoming football game Friday, September 30th, when they played Harbor Springs. All the profits from the sale of pizzas were donated to a sports scholarship fund to assist students who cannot pay to participate. SEEDS would like to thank the Kalkaska Athletic Boosters for their support. We would also like to thank the Cherry Street Market for their very generous donation of pizza toppings.

Serving Up Salsa @ the Blazer Bash!

September 1, 2011

SEEDS staff were on hand at the annual Blazer Bash with lots of local tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, and cilantro - much of it from the SEEDS Farm at the Barns. Students, families, and friends tried their hand at making their own salsa or just enjoyed the salsa made by SEEDS staff. What a great way to celebrate the start of another school year!

Traverse City Beach Bums Game

July 20, 2011

SEEDS sponsored a free family night at a Traverse City Beach Bums game on Wednesday, July 20, 2011. Over 30 students and family members from Kalkaska came out to enjoy the game. To top it off, the Bums came back in the ninth to take the lead and win the game 10-9 against the Wild. Way to go Bums!

SEEDS sponsored a free community performance of Riverside Shakespeare's Henry V at the Mill Pond Park in Kalkaska on Thursday, July 21st. Community folk came out with lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the play and have some artisan pizza. Look for more Shakespeare next summer!

SEEDS Thrift Shoppe Fashion Show, Clothing Swap and Spaghetti Dinner

On Friday, May 6, 2011, SEEDS Afterschool held a fashion show and dinner. Students in the SEEDS Afterschool program recently traveled to Traverse City to purchase clothing based upon different themes. Some of the themes included a pajama party, picnic, job interview, camping trip and tennis game. They showed off their new duds on the catwalk for family and friends. Everyone then enjoyed spaghetti, salad and bread prepared by the SEEDS Afterschool Culinary Club.

SEEDS Afterschool @ the 75th National Trout Festival & Taste of Trout

SEEDS KMS Afterschool once again participated in the National Trout Festival festivities. Our brightly colored entry in the festival landed the students 3rd place in the parade. Students wore creative paper-mache trout hats, gave out packets of sunflower seeds to plant, and just had a great time.

Our Culinary Club won Most Creative Use of Trout at the Taste of Trout Competition. They prepared fish tacos with cole slaw and homemade salsa.  Yum!
