In collaboration with the Kalkaska High School, SEEDS was at the open house for the families of next year's incoming 9th grade students. Fresh homemade salsa, local tortilla chips, hot bean dip, and cookies were provided by SEEDS staff as school counselors assisted families of incoming freshmen transition to high school.

Family Financial Aid Night

Thursday, December 13, 2012. 5 - 7 pm

SEEDS teamed up with the Kalkaska High School counselors and Northwestern Michigan College to offer an informative night for senior students and their families on how to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). A completed FAFSA often helps new college students earn scholarships and other funding to continue their education. SEEDS prepared a taco bar with local Shetler Dairy hamburger so families can enjoy some food while learning the ins and outs of college aid. We packed the cafeteria with over 90 students and family members!

Our first Family/Community  Meal & Advisory Board Meeting

On the 3rd Thursday of each month, the SEEDS Culinary students prepare and serve a family and community meal. Our first meal was November 15, 2012. Everyone enjoyed tasty meatloaf, mashed potatoes and salad. Yum!

SEEDS KHS Kickoff

Friday, October 19, 2012. 3 - 7 pm

SEEDS celebrated the start of another year of afterschool programs with a bang at KHS. Our culinary students were busy earlier - making chili and hot cocoa to give to folks attending the local JV/Varsity football games. Warm soup and drink were especially appreciated on the brisk evening.

Serving Up Salsa @ the Blazer Bash!

August 30, 2012. 4:30 - 7 pm

SEEDS staff were on hand at the annual Blazer Bash with lots of local tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, and cilantro - much of it from the SEEDS Farm at the Barns. Students, families, and friends tried their hand at making their own salsa or just enjoyed the salsa made by SEEDS staff. What a great way to celebrate the start of another school year!

End of the School Year Celebration

May 17, 2012

Students at SEEDS KHS celebrated the end of the school year a bit early so the high school seniors could attend. We enjoyed grilled dogs, potato salad, guacamole, bean dip and more. Laughter was plentiful as three-legged races, corn toss, and other games were played outside in the spring sunshine.

Elders Project Celebration

May 8, 2012 5 - 6 pm

SEEDS After School at KHS collaborated with the Kalkaska County Library, the Kalkaska County Commission on Aging, and local poet Terry Wooten to connect some of our students with some of the seniors in our community. Each student interviewed an individual, transcribed the tape recording, and wrote a poem about one of the stories the senior told them.

The experience offered our students a chance to connect with someone who has lived in the community for a long time. They also discovered that even though they are young and the individual they interviewed was much older, there were still many things that each of them had in common.

The project ended with a celebration at the county library where the students read their completed poems to the senior they interviewed. It was a rewarding end to a very rewarding project.
